How to Use Essential Oils

After you have signed up or bought a few oils, you are probably wondering how to use essential oils. There are 3 main ways to use the oils, which we will discuss here.

Before we get started, I have a major caution for you. The methods described in this guide are ONLY for Young Living Essential Oils. I cannot say that it is safe for any of these methods with other oils purchased elsewhere or from other companies. Even “YL” oils on Amazon or eBay cannot be guaranteed as real, so I’d just stick to buying them directly from Young Living, okay?

Also, if you are on medications or under the care of a physician, inform them that you are using oils to verify it is okay with your plan of care. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss this with your physician as well. A good reference for essential oil usage and cautions is the “Essential Oils Pocket Reference” which everyone who uses these oils should have available for them. Another good option if you like e-version of books is the “Essential Oils Desk Reference Online”. If you don’t have one yet, contact us or the person who signed you up to help direct you to getting one.

Method 1: Diffusing
Remember that $75 (or more) diffuser that comes in the Premium Starter Kit? Well, this is where it comes to really good use!

When diffusing Young Living Essential Oils, you are breathing them in and processing it directly through your olfactory system, which sends the therapeutic benefits of the oils to your brain. The diffuser breaks the oils down into tiny molecules and projects them into the air.

Studies done at Weber State University showed the amazing power of the “Thieves” essential oil blend. One study showed a 99.3% reduction of microorganisms after diffusing Thieves for only 20 minutes. With cold season always around the corner, this is a must have for any home!

One of the best things about this method is that everyone in the room breathing it in benefits!

You can use a single oil, or get creative and combine a few to find some amazing combinations!

Method 2: Applying Topically
Your skin is a GREAT way to receive the benefits of these oils.

Applying an Oil “Neat”
Neat means that it is not diluted. Essentially, it just means it is used straight out of the bottle, dropped onto your hand, and then applied where you want it to go. Not all oils can be used like this though. To see if your oil cannot be used like this, look at your bottle, it will say if dilution is required or not. You can also  refer to your “Essential Oils Pocket Reference” or look at the oil use directions on the Young Living website and search for your oil.

Applying an Oil “Diluted”
“Diluted” means that you are using your essential oil of choice with an organic “carrier oil” such as olive oil, coconut oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, or grapeseed oil. Buy these in the grocery or cooking section of a store, not the beauty area. Make sure nothing is added to your carrier oil. You want 100% pure, and organic is best if possible.

If your oil says you need to dilute it, it will say the ratio on the bottle (or online at the Young Living website). For example, 1:1 means 1 drop of essential oil to 1 drop of your carrier oil.

We don’t suggest pre-mixing your oils with a carrier oil. Why? Well, essential oils do not expire. However, the carrier oil does. If you don’t use it before it is expired, you wasted your essential oils, too! The only thing I ever pre-mix with a carrier oil is a roller bottle and I use those, so they don’t expire on me!

You may also want to do a test area on your skin to make sure that you are able to handle your oil topically. The oils might react with some toxins in your body and give you a reaction because of it. It isn’t really the oil that you are reacting to, but the toxins in or on your body that it was applied to. A “detox” is maybe a good idea before doing this, but not always needed. More on this later!

Areas to Apply:
  • Wrists – just a general good area
  • Back of neck – great for emotional uses of the oils
  • Temples – great for headaches
  • Forehead – also good for headaches and wrinkles
  • Behind the ears
  • Stomach – great for digestive issues
  • Feet – with the corresponding Vita Flex Point (more about that soon!)
  • Chest – great location for indigestion or respiratory issues
  • Targeted area – for instance, if I have pain with my wrist, I apply the oil there
  • Usually only 1-4 drops on the area will be needed.

Method 3: Ingesting
Ingesting essential oils is scary for a lot of people. It was for me at first, too. However, it isn’t really scary at all. Just make sure it is a Young Living essential oil and that it is listed on the bottle as a “Dietary Supplement”. If you pull back the label, and you see a white box that has the supplement facts on it, it is okay to ingest. If you don't see it, don't ingest it. Not all of the oils are safe for ingestion, so make sure you check first!

Drink It
Essential oils can be ingested with water. Remember to ALWAYS use a GLASS. Stirring doesn’t work for me, the oils just float on top and it is hard to get down. I suggest you get a glass water bottle with a top so you can shake it. Add in cold water, some ice, your oils of choice, and shake it up!

Start with 1 drop, maybe 2. Some of the oils are stronger than others. You can also add some Stevia, sugar, agave, or honey to it, too.

Oils to try with this method: Lemon, Peppermint, Lavender, Grapefruit, Orange, Lime

Capsules
Essential oils can also be ingested by putting them into vegetable capsules (usually size 00). Many people add in the ingestible oils they want to take into a single pill, and ingest this daily.

Fill the larger portion of the empty pill with the ingestible oils of your choice, including a carrier oil of your choice to fill it up. Then, apply the smaller part of the pill to close it, and swallow it. Drink with a full glass of water with this method.
